Cucamelon

Plant of the Week

The plant of the week is… The Cucamelon!

Cucamelons are small, roughly grape sized, fruit that is a cross between a cucumber and a melon. Even though it looks like a tiny watermelon it tastes like a citrusy, yet tart cucumber! They can be used as a little pop of flavour in a salad, a little garden snack fresh off of the vine or even as pickled gherkins! Two other names for them are actually Mexican sour gherkin and mouse melon. Differing from cucumber plants the cucamelon has underground roots that produce edible tubers, similar to radishes. In warmer areas the tubers can allow the plant to act as a perennial, in order for them to come back every year! Though in the colder climates, most will dig them up to get a head start on the next year of gardening! Hundreds of Cucamelons can be produced from just a single vine during one growing season. Fun fact: Cucamelons are tiny nutrient powerhouses! They are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber.

Type: annual fruit (although eaten as a veggie, like tomato)

Height: plant 1 ft tall, vines up to 10 ft.

Moisture: well drained, rich warm soil - amend with compost before planting

Watering:  Keep well watered.  Vines will shrivel if they dry out.
