A "happy" flower for the garden. It is not a perennial in the common sense of the word as it does not reliably come back every year. To keep it in the garden you must allow it to self seed and plan for it to appear randomly throughout the garden. Some may find this charming, but for those who like a planned garden, it might be annoying. Black Eyed Susan like to grow in disturbed soils, so it is often thought of as a colonizing plant. Once a garden is established, it is less likely to grow in your garden.

What are Clippings?
Clippings are pieces cut from existing mature plants. They are then placed in water and allowed to build roots. Some grow quickly while others take longer to propagate (grow roots). Once there are several new roots growing and they are at least 1" long it's time to plant. They are great for experimenting, trying new varieties or even adding to aquariums and water features.
Planting
When ready to plant you'll place your clipping in a pot with dirt. You'll want to make sure that the soil stays extra moist for several days to help it acclimatize to its new environment. Congratulations! You have a new plant baby.

Every part of this plant is edible! It has a mild, cucumber-like taste that's delicious in salads and beverage garnishes. I dry the flower heads for bath salts, soap making + crafts, and when frozen in ice cubes, Borage makes a whimsical addition to drinks.

We grow Bronze Fennel in our food garden for the delicious anise-tasting leaves and seeds, but also as an incredible pollinator magnet that increases biodiversity. It's a host plant for several swallowtail butterfly species, including Anise Swallowtail and Eastern Black Swallowtail, while its nectar is an important food source for many types of bees and wasps. We've also spotted Ruby Throated Hummingbirds paying a visit!
The leaves of Bronze Fennel are delicious fresh in salads, and can be dried for seasoning. All parts of the plant, including the seeds, make a delicious and soothing tea.
NOTE: This a perennial plant with roots, not the bulb-forming fennel veggie you may be more familiar with.
